Questions
Why does the count change from network to network?
Each network counts in its own way. Bluesky counts what you see, so one emoji is one character. Mastodon counts every link as 23 characters. YouTube descriptions are limited in bytes, so some letters and emoji take up more room. We count exactly like each network, so what fits here fits there.
How are emoji counted?
Most networks count what you see: one emoji is one character, even when it's built from several pieces (like a family or a flag). Networks with a byte limit, like YouTube descriptions, count emoji as more.
Do links count toward the limit?
On Mastodon a link always counts as 23 characters. On other networks the full link counts, so a short link helps.
